About Penelakut Tribe

Penelakut Tribe consists of approximately 980 members.  Our reserve land base is made up of four reserves; Galiano Island 9, Penelakut Island 7, Tent island 8, and Tsussie 6.   Penelakut Island is where majority of our population resides.

The vision from our members describes a community that is dependent on one another, healthy, housed, educated and living in our culture. The desire is to have a vibrant economy, improve infrastructure, appropriate leadership and a clean environment.

This discussion of a community vision has helped us shape our goals, more specific objectives, and a plan of action.

We place great importance on our traditional teachings,  emphasizing the traditional medicines, plants, language, and traditional lands that are integral to life for the Penelakut people.

We are a proud and forward-thinking people and have recently redeveloped the old residential school into an adult learning centre. Teachings learned here will lead us forward into the proper management of our reserve lands and resources.

We are committed to making the best and suitable decisions for the land we share.
